Capsules of Wonder: A Futuristic Introductory Passageway

An immersive experience at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair

Inspiration for the introductory passageway design came from the organiser's requirement of stimulating the imagination of the visitor with the feeling of new discoveries. This led to researching imaginary science fictional worlds of holodecks and time capsules. From this series of futuristic themed experienced was depicted and developed under the concept name Capsules of Wonder.

The Salon de TE, located in a specialized hall at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair, was designed to showcase over 140 international premium watch brands. To set it apart and create a memorable experience for visitors, an 1800 square meter introductory passageway was created under the concept of Capsules of Wonder. This passageway aimed to stimulate the feeling of new discoveries before visitors embarked on their journey to explore the various watch brands.

The design of the passageway incorporated a futuristic theme, featuring a welcome reception, a VIP lounge, and an open stage area for multifunctional activities. The goal was to create an immersive and visually captivating experience that would engage visitors from the moment they entered.

To bring the design to life, the production team opted for lightweight and reusable materials. The walls were made with aluminum systems covered with stretched vinyl prints, avoiding the use of heavy wooden structures. Furniture, props, lighting, and LED screens were rented, reducing waste and environmental impact. Biodegradable carpets covered the exhibition hall flooring, further emphasizing the commitment to sustainability.

The passageway featured several unique elements, including acrylic mirrored cladding in the reception and VIP lounge areas. A 3-meter high by 5-meter wide hexagon-shaped gateway with an LED screen greeted visitors into the 45-meter long by 7.5-meter wide by 6-meter high passageway. An interactive screen measuring 3 meters high by 9 meters wide was strategically placed near the entrance space to engage visitors from the start.

Further inside the passageway, an open chamber area with a 17-meter diameter housed a 9-meter wide stage. This space was designed to accommodate multifunctional activities such as product parades, cocktails, and seminars, adding versatility to the overall experience.

The design of the passageway was carefully crafted to guide visitors through a journey of different themes. Four hexagon portals led to unique zones named Arctic Retreat, Aqua Pod, Botanic Lab, and Time Observatory. Each zone offered a distinct experience, transporting visitors to different worlds within the Salon de TE.

The Capsules of Wonder passageway was a result of three months of intensive planning and execution. It was launched on September 4, 2018, and ran for five days during the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair. Despite the tight timeframe, the design team successfully created a captivating and immersive experience for visitors.

The Capsules of Wonder passageway received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Event and Happening Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
